Most of the best VIC software was released on 8K and 16K cartridges.  With a little work, VIC carts can be dumped to disk and enjoyed without needing the actual cartridge.  You'll need RAM expansion to play them.  The 8K carts require 8K expansion in block 5 ($A000), the 16K carts need an additional 8K in block 1,2, or 3, depending on the game.  Read Understanding VIC-20 RAM Expansion to learn more.  The menu program on each disk will let you know where your RAM needs to go.
